To nurture social entrepreneurship and build character among the youth, SNCF & MoneyTree Singapore Pte Ltd developed an elective programme that leverages the co-operative principles of self and mutual help, and seeks to complement the education values taught in schools. The programme, YSEP - Social Coop Inc. (SCI) aims to impart Social Entrepreneurship and Co-operative values & principles to students in schools throughout Singapore. YSEP-SCI is focused on character building and equipping Singapore students with necessary life skills, the programme also provides practical aspects of being a social entrepreneur, encourages students to recognise and take initiatives to address social issues to improve the communities and nation.

We aim to reach out to the youth in schools to contribute to the MOE’s initiative of nurturing students into confident, self-directed learners, concerned citizens and active contributors through the Character and Citizenship Education (CCE). It is aligned with the very principles of Co-operatives: self-help, mutual-help, resilience, and care for community.

Programme Overview:

Module 1

Students will acquire the concept of entrepreneurship, how social entrepreneurs can make a difference and contribute to the society, and be inspired to become a social entrepreneur.  Students will learn how Co-operatives / Social enterprises commit to achieve both economic and social missions. They will also learn the values & principles that govern Co-operatives, and reflect on how to apply these values and principles in their daily lives. Students will be required to identify social problems and generate business ideas to solve those problems. At the end of the module, students will participate in a Learning Camp to share their knowledge and experiences from the programme and apply some of the skills that they have learnt through fun-filled activities. Students will then participate in an Inter-School Business Pitch Competition (ICE Challenge). They will compete with each other to present business plans of their social enterprise ideas. The winners will be judged based on the relevance and feasibility of their social enterprise ideas, business plans, and more importantly, how their business ideas will help to address social issues, contribute to the society, and make a difference.

Module 2

This module is an Intermediate Course where students will continue to learn more about different types of Social Enterprises, Charities and Co-operatives. Students will be assisted to come up with their own Social Enterprise ideas through a structured Idea Generation process. They will be taught to make a business plan for their concept and be able to present the same. Thus they will also acquire business communication and presentation skills in this module.

Module 3

This is an Advanced module where students will acquire the necessary skills and business acumen to be able to start and run their own Social Enterprise Project. They will learn advanced concepts like Procurement of resources for their set-up, Human Resource Management and Financial Analysis. Students will also be given the opportunity to undergo Job Shadowing with successful Co-operatives in Singapore to give them greater insight and hands on experience of the structure and functioning of a real business entity.

SCI is eligible for funding from the Ministry of Social and Family Development (MSF) under the Young Social Entrepreneurship Programme (YSEP) Scheme for schools. We would be glad to assist you with the application process. We look forward to hearing from you and explore how we can work together to educate, impart values, and build students’ character to empower our youth to become concerned citizens and active contributors.
